Mark Chan - Music without Borders

With an illustrious career spanning more than 40 years, Mark Chan is one of the pioneers of Singapore music. His music defies genre, tradition and definition. He continually pushes boundaries, fusing a distinctive East-West classical-pop, traditional-contemporary style and vocabulary.

A man of many talents, Mark’s oeuvre includes poems, librettos and music for theatre, orchestra, film, as well as contemporary dance and arts festivals in Singapore and worldwide. His works comprise well over 30 theatre productions, seven solo albums, numerous arts festivals, music festivals, experimental pieces as well as seminal large productions such as the first full-scale score of a black-and-white Chinese silent film Little Toys (2003 Hong Kong Arts Festival; 2003 Singapore Arts Festival; 2003 Images of Asia, Copenhagen; 2007 Shanghai International Festival; Singapore Season Paris 2010; Musee Quai Branly).

His motto is: Music Without Borders.

Mark released his 7th album, Blue Guitar last year and is currently working on an original film score for the latest film by respected Indian art film director Dr Biju Kumar. In 2016, Mark received the Artistic Excellence Award from COMPASS. He is currently completing his first novel, a magical fantasy set in three cities, one of which is, of course, Singapore!
