Romance at Fort Canning

By Bras Basah Bugis on Mar 2017

Imagine a walk in the park surrounded by lush greenery; the calm and serenity washing over you as you feel one with nature. At peace and adrift, such an experience would be enhanced by having a loved one by our side. Holding hands, beaming faces, hearts full of love - who says romance exists only in grand gestures or extravagant dinners?

As we prove right the critics of Valentine’s Day that romance should be celebrated every day, here are some ways you can weave a tale as old as time in Fort Canning Park.

Connect with nature at Fort Canning

Forget your rose garden and behold the magnificent sight of some of Mother Nature’s finest. As part of NParks’ efforts to conserve mature trees in Singapore, 178 of them have been listed as Heritage Trees.

Bask in the regalness of the Flame of the Forest, named for its scarlet flowers that cover its broad, umbrella-shaped crown when in full bloom. Or learn something new for your next trivia quiz with the Paperbark Tree – did you know its leaves have medicinal properties or that Kampong Glam was named after it?

The absence of the Beast might be tempting but it would be best to refrain from being handsy with the foliage as it might earn you more than a disapproving glare from the authorities.

And if you’re a lover of nature, look out for the Trees of the Fort guided trail. While this month’s registration is over, the next one will be held on 29 Apr. Registration closes on 23 Apr or when it’s fully booked.

Hi-Tea in the Park

Once you have walked up an appetite, retreat to the air-conditioned interior of Hotel Fort Canning to try their high tea. After all, the way to anyone’s heart is through their stomach.

An English practice that began in the mid-1700s, Hotel Fort Canning celebrates the time-honoured tradition of tea with their Hi-Tea set. It is s erved on a magnificent custom hardwood frame with a choice of an aromatic selection of TWG tea blends, coffee, or Prosecco if you prefer a touch of exuberance.

Paying tribute to the hotel’s traditional heritage, the menu is a fusion of British and local flavours, with highlights such as coronation chicken tartlets with a hint of curry, seafood kueh pie tee with crunchy bay shrimp, Norwegian smoked salmon and cucumber sandwiches with caviar, along with a variety of desserts and a seasonal selection of mirror-glazed cakes.
